Workload Management Cited as Key Reason
Following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy, former captain Babar Azam has opted out of the National T20 Championship, citing workload management and upcoming international commitments.
Dropped from the New Zealand T20 Series
Babar, along with wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan and pacer Naseem Shah, was left out of Pakistan’s squad for the five-match T20 series against New Zealand, starting March 16 in Christchurch. However, all three players have been retained for the three-match ODI series against the Kiwis.
PCB Initially Expected Babar to Play
When announcing the squad, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had stated that centrally contracted players, including Babar, Rizwan, and Naseem, would participate in the National T20 Championship, scheduled to begin this week in Faisalabad. However, it has now been confirmed that Babar and Naseem have withdrawn from the tournament.
PSL Takes Priority Over Domestic Cricket?
A reliable PCB source suggested that with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) set to begin in mid-April, these players seem to be prioritizing franchise cricket over domestic competitions.
“Given the inconsistent policies of the national selectors, they are aware that a strong PSL performance will earn them a recall to the national T20 side. Additionally, social media hype around their PSL performances will further strengthen their case,” the source added.
Babar Azam’s Domestic Cricket Absence Continues
Babar has not played a domestic first-class match since 2020, raising concerns about his commitment to Pakistan’s local cricket structure. His decision to skip the National T20 Championship further highlights the growing preference among top players for franchise leagues over domestic cricket.
