RAWALPINDI: Peshawar Zalmi’s disappointing run in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 has triggered intense debate, with repeated strategic errors now being seen as critical missteps that may have cost the team its momentum.
At the center of the storm is the controversial decision to bowl first in a must-win game against Lahore Qalandars—just a day after a similar move backfired against Karachi Kings. Despite the backlash, Head Coach Mohammad Akram came forward to defend captain Babar Azam, clarifying that the decision was a collective call made by the team management.
“Babar didn’t make the call alone. The entire think-tank was involved and we all own that decision,” said Akram in response to public criticism.
The gamble failed once again, as Zalmi’s batters struggled to chase under the lights on a traditionally high-scoring Rawalpindi pitch. While many analysts argue that opting to bat first would have been wiser, Akram maintained that the strategy was agreed upon unanimously.
He also took the opportunity to praise Babar Azam’s recent form, stating,
“Babar is back to his vintage best. His recent innings prove he’s still world-class. He was our top scorer last season and he’s delivering again when it matters most.”
Describing Babar as the “heartbeat” of Zalmi’s lineup, Akram noted the immense pressure the skipper faces both on and off the field. The coach then shifted focus to challenges faced by the team after the mid-season break.
“We had the strongest squad on paper this season. Unfortunately, we lost key players to national duty and the IPL, which hurt our balance during the critical stages.”
One of the most questioned decisions was the exclusion of left-arm spinner Mehran Mumtaz, who had previously performed well on Rawalpindi’s spin-friendly tracks.
Akram attempted to explain:
“We already had Saim Ayub and Maaz Sadaqat providing spin options. Including another finger spinner was a tactical dilemma.”
Still, the omission has sparked criticism from fans and experts alike who believe Mumtaz could have made a real difference.
The coach also acknowledged the unwavering support from the franchise’s fanbase:
“From Karachi to Lahore to Rawalpindi—our fans are incredible. Their loyalty fuels our players.”
Akram concluded by praising franchise owner Javed Afridi for his visionary leadership and dedication to youth development:
“Javed Afridi is the soul of Zalmi. His commitment to young talent has transformed the cricketing scene in Pakistan.”
As the season nears its conclusion, Peshawar Zalmi faces tough questions and a pressing need to reevaluate its strategy to come back stronger in the next edition of the PSL.
