A Voice of Support in Challenging Times
Pakistan Test cricketer Umar Akmal has come out in support of Babar Azam, who has been under increasing scrutiny for his recent dip in form. Amid growing criticism, Akmal took to his YouTube channel on Tuesday to back the struggling Peshawar Zalmi captain.
Babar’s Recent Struggles in the Spotlight
Babar has been facing harsh criticism, particularly after a string of poor performances in the ongoing PSL 10. He was dismissed for three consecutive single-digit scores before showing some fight with a 47-run innings in Zalmi’s narrow two-wicket loss to Karachi Kings on Monday.
Despite this knock, pressure continues to mount on Babar as both fans and pundits question his place and impact.
Umar Akmal’s Message: “Stay True to Yourself”
In his video message, Umar Akmal voiced strong confidence in Babar’s abilities and advised him to ignore external pressure.
“Yes, he’s going through a tough phase, but he’s still Pakistan’s best batter,” Akmal said.
“My personal request to Babar Azam is that he should forget everything, the criticism on social media, and just focus on his cricket.”
“Play Your Natural Game” – The Key to Rediscovery
Akmal emphasized that Babar’s strength lies in his natural style—a steady buildup before accelerating, especially in T20s. He encouraged Babar to go back to what worked during his prime, rather than trying to respond to noise or quick-fix solutions.
“He needs to play his natural game. That’s the only way he’ll find his rhythm again,” Akmal said.
National Expectations, Personal Pressure
Akmal acknowledged the immense pressure Babar faces as the face of Pakistan cricket and a role model for millions. This expectation, he said, can sometimes lead players to overthink or alter their approach.
“In his prime, he would take his time and then accelerate. That’s what he needs to get back to. If he plays naturally, the runs will come — and with them, the confidence and his place in the T20I squad,” Akmal added.
Zalmi’s Struggles Add to the Pressure
It’s worth noting that Peshawar Zalmi, under Babar’s leadership, have had a rough start to PSL 10. With just one win in their first four matches, the team’s playoff hopes hang in the balance.
With six league-stage gas remaining, the side will need a strong comeback to remain in contention.
