Pakistani batter Umar Akmal has made a surprising revelation, claiming that he played a role in helping star cricketer Babar Azam overcome his struggles against spin bowling.
Babar has been under scrutiny in recent months due to his difficulties against spinners, with a significant number of his dismissals coming against them. Several former cricketers have pointed out his limited range of shots when facing spin, further fueling concerns about his batting approach.
Umar Akmal’s Advice to Babar Azam
In a recent interview with a private TV channel, Umar Akmal recalled an instance where Babar Azam sought his advice on tackling spin bowling. According to Akmal, Babar was facing challenges, particularly getting dismissed at midwicket, prompting him to seek guidance.
“I remember clearly that he was struggling against spinners. He kept getting out at midwicket, so he came to me and said, ‘Umar bhai, I’m struggling a little,’” Akmal revealed.
The experienced batter then suggested adjustments to Babar’s grip and approach against spinners.
“I asked him about his bat grip and advised that when the spinner approaches, he should change his grip and keep his eyes on the ball until the halfway point. Then he could either cut it or play it in a way that ensures it doesn’t go flat,” Umar Akmal explained.
Babar Azam’s Declining Stats Against Spin
Babar Azam was once considered one of the best batters against spin, averaging an impressive 82.1 against spinners until the end of 2021. However, since then, his average has dropped significantly to around 48.
In 2023, his struggles became even more evident as he played against spin at a strike rate of just 77.7, raising concerns over his ability to dominate slow bowlers as effectively as before.
With growing discussions around his performances, it remains to be seen whether Babar will refine his game and return to his dominant best against spinners.
