LAHORE: Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam and pace sensation Naseem Shah failed to make an impact in their return to the National T20 Cup, as Karachi Whites secured a convincing victory over Lahore Blues at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.
Both players were rested for Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand following the team’s underwhelming performance in the recently concluded Champions Trophy. Initially, there were speculations that Babar and Naseem had opted out of the domestic tournament, but they eventually featured in Lahore Blues’ playing XI against Karachi Whites.
Babar and Naseem Fail to Deliver
Despite high expectations, both Babar and Naseem struggled in the match. Babar managed a scratchy 23 off 17 balls, while Naseem remained wicketless, conceding 41 runs in his four-over spell. Their lackluster performances added to Lahore Blues’ woes, as the team was bowled out for just 134 in 18.4 overs while chasing a target of 172.
Qasim Akram was the top scorer for Lahore Blues, contributing 36 off 28 deliveries, including four boundaries and a six. However, his efforts were not enough to steer his team to victory.
Karachi Whites’ Bowlers Seal the Win
Karachi Whites’ bowlers put on a dominant display, led by Arif Yaqoob, who took four wickets for just 23 runs in his four overs. Fast bowler Mohammad Umar and left-arm spinner Danish Aziz also played pivotal roles, claiming two wickets each to dismantle Lahore’s batting lineup.
Saud Shakeel’s Brilliance Sets Up Karachi’s Win
Earlier in the match, Karachi Whites posted a formidable total of 172 in their 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant half-century by Saud Shakeel. The left-hander led from the front, scoring a commanding 73 off 52 balls, laced with eight fours and three sixes.
In the latter stages of the innings, Danish Aziz (23) and Saqib Khan (20) provided valuable contributions, adding quick runs to help Karachi Whites reach a competitive total.
For Lahore Blues, Qasim Akram, Mohammad Irfan, and Nisar Ahmed each picked up a wicket but failed to contain Karachi’s batters.
With this win, Karachi Whites asserted their dominance, while Lahore Blues suffered their first defeat of the tournament, raising concerns over the form of their key players ahead of future contests.
