Pakistan Star Batter Takes a Break from Cricket
LAHORE: After Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, former captain Babar Azam was seen unwinding with a game of padel tennis. He was spotted playing the sport alongside his brothers, fellow cricketers Imam-ul-Haq and Usman Qadir, and close friends.
The Pakistani squad returned home last week following a disastrous campaign in the Champions Trophy. While some players are taking time off, Babar has opted for padel tennis as a recreational activity.
Babar Azam Under Scrutiny for Recent Performances
Babar, who has struggled with form since his 151-run knock against Nepal in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023, has been facing heavy criticism. Despite being promoted to the opening slot for the tri-nation ODI series and the Champions Trophy, he failed to make a significant impact.
His scores in the tournament remained below expectations:
- 10, 23, 29, 64, and 23 in five innings.
Pakistan’s Upcoming Tour of New Zealand
Following the Champions Trophy debacle, Pakistan is set to tour New Zealand for a five-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series from March 16 to April 5.
However, reports suggest that several senior players, including Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and Babar Azam, are considering taking a break from international cricket. This decision is reportedly being discussed in selection meetings, with some players looking to step back voluntarily rather than face exclusion from the squad.
PCB Considering Fresh Talent for White-Ball Series
With key players potentially opting out, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is exploring the possibility of introducing young talent in the upcoming white-ball series. This could mark a significant shift in the team’s strategy as they rebuild after their poor performance in the Champions Trophy.
